Among the Top 10 Indian Festivals that are celebrated in the nation, one of the most popular festivals is Diwali. However, there are very few people who actually know the significance of celebrating Diwali besides the return of Lord Rama. Diwali is just not the festivals of lights or the occasion when you get the Corporate Diwali gifts. Here are the popular reasons to celebrate Diwali.
Birthday of Goddess Lakshmi
Diwali is considered to be a day when the Goddess of wealth, Lakshmi was incarnated from the depth of the ocean that was said to be bottomless. According to the Hindu scriptures both Devas(gods) as well as the Asuras (demons) were mortal (Mrita) initially. Having seeked a deathless condition (Amarattva), both of them churned the ocean with an intention to seek the Amrita which is considered to be the nectar of immortality. While this process was going on a lot of divine celestial objects came to the forefront and the most eminent among these was the Goddess Lakshmi who is the daughter of the king of the milky ocean. This happened on the new moon day (amaavasyaa) of the Kartik month. She was then married to Lord Vishnu on the same dark night of the year with brilliant lamps being illuminated as well as placed in rows so as to mark the holy occasion.
Legend of King Mahabali
The Bhagavata Purana which is considered to be a sacred Hindu text shows that on the Diwali day Lord Vishnu, in his fifth incarnation in the form of Vaman-avtaara, saved Lakshmi from the jail of King Bali while Treta Yug was going on. Bali who was a powerful demon king ruled the earth as he was invincible and no gods could defeat him. Lord Vishnu came disguised as the short Brahmin and then approached Bali for charity. The righteous as well as the benevolent King as he was he could not say no and got tricked and gave up his kingship and wealth.
All in all, these are the popular reasons to celebrate Diwali that you must know.
